Light Weaving: An Illuminated Masterpiece

Sammy Liu's Award-Winning Installation Art Illuminates Taiwan

Sammy Liu - Golden Eagle's Light Weaving, a unique installation art piece, combines traditional Taiwanese weaving techniques with modern technology to create a mesmerizing spectacle of light and shadow. This innovative design, which won the Silver A' Lighting Products and Fixtures Design Award in 2020, offers a fresh perspective on public art and its potential to create shared experiences.

The inspiration for Light Weaving came from the simple yet captivating sight of sunlight piercing through a spider's web at dawn. The design team sought to recreate this ethereal scene on a grand scale, using LED lighting to simulate the sun's rays and a complex structure of woven materials to represent the web. The result is a stunning visual display that captivates the viewer's imagination and evokes a sense of wonder.

Light Weaving stands out from other public art installations due to its unique combination of traditional craft and modern technology. The structure is made from stainless steel pipes, high-performance paints, acrylic yarn, and computer-controlled LED lights. The intricate weaving was done by hand by professional weavers, while the lighting effects were programmed to create a fantastical atmosphere. The design team's meticulous attention to detail and commitment to quality is evident in every aspect of the installation.

The installation was exhibited from 15 November 2019 to 2 January 2020 in Banqiao District, New Taipei City, Taiwan. The project was a collaborative effort between the Tourism and Travel Department, New Taipei City Government, Golden Eagle International Lighting and Engineering Co., Ltd, HTLD Optical Art Aesthetics Design Co., Ltd., and artists Liu Chih Liang and One Lee. The team faced the challenge of integrating the installation with the natural environment, using a computer-controlled timing and light sensor to adjust the LED lights according to the ambient light conditions.

Light Weaving is more than just a visual spectacle. It is also an interactive experience that invites the audience to engage with the artwork. The design team's intention was to create a bond between the audience and the creators through the shared experience of the artwork. By bringing delicate weaving artworks outdoors, the team hoped to offer a new perspective on public art and its potential to foster community engagement.

In conclusion, Light Weaving is a testament to the power of art and technology to create shared experiences and inspire wonder. This installation art piece, with its unique blend of traditional craft and modern technology, sets a new standard for public art installations. It serves as a reminder of the endless possibilities that arise when we dare to dream and innovate.
